Rare Game Showcase: Xerox Alto Computer, M82, Racermate Carts & More

Would you pay $30,000 for a computer? How about $2,500 for a Nintendo promotional item? Collectors love eBay, and this past few weeks’ sales demonstrate that well. Here are some of my favorite active and ended rare video game items on eBay.

Interesting Items on eBay

Rare Huffy Space Invader Muscle Bike Bidding is $40.00 USD with less than a day remaining. Ummm, how isn’t this the most awesome thing ever?

Nintendo NES Mike Tyson Punchout Standee 1988 Bidding is $51.00 USD with less than a day remaining.? That’s not a bad price since one of these sold in 2009 for $445.00.

Super Mario Bros Sleeping Bag Bidding is only $8.00 with one day remaining.

World of Nintendo Superbrite M36R Promo Sign Bidding is currently $143.39 with one day remaining.

…This is a superbrite series made by Thomas A. Schutz Co. … The sign has World of Nintendo on both sides, except one side lights up and the other side does not. So I figure this was probably made for a store window to light up the outside and be able to also read it from the inside. … The signs measurements are 36 1/2″ long, 16″ tall, and 6″ deep.

Nintendo DS Neon Sign Starting bid is $50.00 USD.

Super Chair Nintendo Controller Accessory Bidding is currently $100.00 with 4 days remaining.

RACERMATE Challenge II Starting bid of $9.99 USD.

NES Super Stars 5 Game Store Display With a buy it now of $499.99, I’m doubting this will sell. However, it’s an undeniably awesome way to display your 5 favorite NES games in their boxes.

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves Fortune Hunter Edition …why are the most expensive items often sold by zero feedback sellers.? Is that (A) a guarantee that the listing is a scam, (B) simply a sign that someone wants to sell the item anonymously, or (C) some honest guy who simply never used eBay before?

Rare Game Spotted: Unreleased 3D Game Boy Advance Cart

Here’s something you don’t see every day. It’s a pretty fantastic looking prototype Game Boy Advance game. It has 12 hours to go and is already at $302.54, so it’s looking like it’s gaining some attention…especially if it’s undumped. Heck, it’s Star Wars style probably doesn’t hurt the value either.

rare unreleased gameboy advance GBA game UNDUMPED 3D (Update: The auction ended June 15, 2010 at $302.54 USD)

Pretty interesting info from the seller sickertus:

This auction is for an UNRELEASED and UN-DUMPED Nintendo Gameboy GBA game, developed by Marvelous entertainment. The game was never given a title (or it’s buried within the game code) but is datable to about 2001, due to the enormous board sticking out the top of the cart, a style that was only used for a brief while during the beginning of the GBA’s production. The cart is an official nintendo flash cart.

The game itself is GBA Unreleased 3d polygon space shooter. Very raw/unfinished. I wrote them about it in ’08, but they had no idea what it was. Trying to find it a good home. You can fire regular lasers and large “atomic” bombs which detonate and take out large groups of enemies. Eventually you reach the “deathstar” (which you enter in a very cool and seemless fashion (good job animators). Very much like starfox/star wars here, as barriors randomly pop up from the floor and ceiling (which you must try to avoid, of course). Everything is rendered in 3-D. There is a sticker on the reverse for Marvelous entertainment. I wrote to them in ’08, but no-one knew had any recollection of what this game was called.

http://shiggsy.gbadev.org/section.php?s=gba

The gameboy advance is not noted to have explored the use of 3D POLYGON technology to much effect. Several 3D “engine” programs where developed Such as the “blue rose” engine.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4JcpKJZUxQ&feature=related

But for various reasons, this lead to only a handful of games actually published that utilize these features ( fully rendered 3D polygon graphics). The intent of this cart remains unknown, but it is a unique bit of software, and whether it represents an aborted game, or a demonstration piece, it represents an interesting glimpse into a future that wasn’t to be, during the early development of Nintendo’s GBA handheld.

This piece has been in my collection for several years, having acquired it from a collector in europe.

Rare Games Spotted: PowerFest Ticket, Custom Punch-Out Figure, Shantae Complete

eBay has some treasures in store for retro gamers and collectors. I’m personally excited to see how much the complete copy of Shantae for Game Boy will go for at auction rather than being listed with an absurd BIN price. Also of interest is the M8 below that’s getting a bit of bidding action. Enjoy!

Custom Marvel Legends GREAT TIGER from Punch-Out NES I’m not sure what inspired “Joe of War” to create this particular character. Heck, I’d love a King Hippo. However, you have to respect the retro gaming love.

Seller’s Description: Hello and welcome toy enthusiasts! You are bidding on a Custom Marvel Legends GREAT TIGER from Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out the video game! He was built from a Kraven Marvel Legends 6 inch figure. His gloves are partially sculpted. I also sculpted his turban, jewel in turban, mustache, and goatee. All of it was sculpted with Aves Apoxie sculpt. The chest tattoo is a tribal tiger head done in black. Check out the tiger paw print on the butt of his pants haha! Figure is still posable and comes with stand for display.? He was repainted with Testors and Citadel acrylic paints. The last picture shows my work in progress for the figure. Feel free to send me any questions, but NO I do NOT ship outside of the U.S. Check out my custom figure blog here: http://joeofwarcustomactionfigures.blogspot.com/

Game Boy Solar-Pak vs Solar iPhone Charger

My favorite part about flying is getting to read the SkyMall catalog. A special treat is when I fly once at the end of the month and take a return trip in the following month…thus getting to read an updated copy of SkyMall on the return trip. While this proves I’m a geek, it also proves useful as a retro gamer and blogger (which ironically also both prove I’m a geek…). Check this out: you can get a solar charger for your iPhone. I ripped out the page and scanned it for your viewing pleasure. Solar…green…iPhone…? Quite lovely, huh?

While that may be a cool idea, Naki is way ahead of the game here. Back in 1993, they came up with the Solar-Pak for the Original Game Boy. Talk about a piece of retro gaming history! Solar…green…GAME BOY! How freak’n cool is that?

Let’s do a little product comparison to figure out which solar pack is better:

 Naki Solar-Pak

Cool FactorFreak’n 80s RadHipster
Cost>$20 used, >$?? New$69.95

Even without knowing whether or not the Game Boy Solar-Paks works, I’m leaning toward it as the winner. First off, they power an iconic Nintendo gaming system. Secondly, they came out 17 years before the iPhone solar charger. Third, I wouldn’t plug in anything named “Surge” into one of my electronic devices. And finally, there are simply too many other iPhone chargers in existence to justify charging $69.95 for any of them. Thus, the Naki Solar-Pak wins!

I originally blogged about these Solar-Paks after finding one in October. Since then I came across a guy who had a few boxes of them. As any compulsive collector would, I bought them all on the spot! I’m keeping a bunch of them, and the rest I’ve put up in the Video Game Museum eBay Store.
