Rare Video Game Stuff on eBay: Pre-Nintendo, NES Jukebox, Prototypes

It’s no accident that collectors love eBay!  Here’s a bunch of rare & unique video game items that are currently up for sale:

NINTENDO M82 CONSOLE+FULLY LOADED+ZAPPER GUN+CONTROLLER

The Nintendo M82 or “M82 Game Selectable Working Product Display” was an in-store demonstration unit that allowed customers to try up to 12 games before they bought them.  What’s unique here is that unlike arcade machines of the time, this unit allowed for use of normal NES cartridges.  Thus a store owner could quickly update the machine with the newest releases. (Sold on eBay for 510.05 GBP / ~$833.93 USD on Oct. 27, 2009)

Here’s an assortment of other Nintendo Rarity and Radness:

Myriad 6-in-1 / Caltron 6-in-1 — Super Rare Cart

Chances are that if you’re a serious NES collector, you’ve heard of the Caltron 6-in-1.  It’s one of those rare multi-carts that didn’t take off well and thus had a very limited run.  What’s even more facinating is that when Caltron Industries, Inc. went out of business, Myriad Games, Inc. bought out their old stock.  There isn’t any record of Myriad developing their own games.  As a matter of fact all they seem to have done is repackage the Caltron 6-in-1 carts.  You can see from the photo that they individually numbered them and slapped their own label overtop of the existing Caltron label.  Notice that they didn’t even get the size right.  Thus, you can still see the Caltron orange and black label peeking out from underneath.  It’s the same game with a new, worse label…but super rare!

Myriad itself went out of business just about as quickly as it came onto the scene.  Thus their total run of games was probably under or around a 1000 with around 100 copies confirmed to still be in existence.  That makes them one of the rarer original Nintendo games ever released.  Currently there’s a Myriad 6-in-1 cart on eBay with a bid of $950 USD with 1 day 14 hours still remaining.  Let’s see how high it goes!

(Update:  Sold in eBay auction by seller mazoku for $985 USD on October 17, 2009.)

Rare Video Game Hunting: Mini Arcade, FF9, Boxed SNES, etc

Rare Video Game Hunting 10102009I’ve had some great fun video game hunting a weeks ago (October . I got the following lot of games at a local flea market (swap meet) in one morning of hunting. Although none of these are super rare, the Taiko Drum Master PS2 game fits into the moderately rare category.

My favorite part of the hunt happened when I came across a vendor with a pile of N64 stuff. There was a N64 storage drawer with a system on top and 3 controllers. The drawer was partially opened revealing about 8 games and seemed to have already been rummaged through by other shoppers. The seller named a fair price if I bought everything as a lot, so I bought it. As I was packing it up, I find that the storage box’s drawer wouldn’t close. Sure enough, there were about 8 more games wedged in the back preventing the drawer from closing! Talk about a nice bonus for buying everything as a lot!

The other unique item here is the mini-Pac-Man Arcade. I don’t know much about it other than that it looks awesome and seems to have been made in 1981. If you’re familiar with this item, I’d love some info on it.

All those SNES boxes are empty, but they’ll help me fill out my own SNES collection.

In case you’ve ever wondered where eBay sellers get all the stuff they sell, I’m one example. Obviously, I’m enjoying the treasure hunting aspect of this, so I’ve built a small business model around my hobby: a) I like hunting for and collecting retro video games b) I find too many, so I resell them on eBay. c) Hopefully, “a” & “b” reimburse me and even make a few bucks so I can continue more of “a”. Pretty simple… It’s all smaller scale, which is perfect because it keeps it enjoyable. Feel free to check it out in auction / listing form if you’re curious about examples of parting out and pricing items.

Nintendo Campus Challenge 1991 — aka Most Expensive Video Game Ever Sold!

A the world’s second most expensive video game just sold on eBay! The ultra rare “Nintendo Campus Challenge 1991” cartridge closed for $20,100. I’d imagine some collector is incredibly happy and most likely very poor right now. Not to mention that JJ Hendricks, the seller of the game and owner of JJGames.com and VGPC.com recouped a bit of money from his big video game splurge earlier this year.

Why so expensive? If you remember from earlier this year, the most expensive game every purchased went for $17,500. That was JJ as well. However in that case, he was making an addition to his collection. JJ managed to track down a gold copy of the “NES World Championships 1990.” While 26 of those gold cartridges were produces, only 12 are still confirmed to be in existence.

So here’s the thing that makes the Nintendo Campus Challenge 1991 cart so rare: only one is known to have survived the competition’s destroy-when-the-competition-is-over instructions. Apparently some employee at Nintendo managed to save this one from the axe. Years later it popped up at a yard sale.

$20,100…I can’t say I’d ever spend that much on a game, but I love the ability of eBay to unite us collectors. It was a rare video game collector’s dream to watch this thing jump from $8,500 to $20,100 in the last minute. Thanks JJ for putting it in auction format!

Here’s the last 2 minutes of the auction captured on YouTube!

New Kids on the Block Box for Prototype NES Game

Just when you think your childhood couldn’t have been any cooler, imagine this! We all know the greatness of the original 8-bit Nintendo and, if we are ok admitting it, many of us also loved the early boy band New Kids on the Block.

As if that weren’t great enough, just recently the world found out that these two mega hits could have become one. This sample New Kids on the Block prototype box just surfaced on eBay! Unfortunately it never made it past the drawing board. Thus the seller “Mazoku” explains that it’s just a piece of photo paper that’s wrapped around a cardboard box. Those black things on the back are Velcro, so I’m assuming it was stuck to some sort of a photo board for display. No prototype game is know to have been made to go along with this, so we can only guess as to the games style.

(Update: Just for the record for anyone who might be snubbing their nose at this one, the auction just closed on October 20, 2009 at $589.00 USD with $3.99 s/h.)

Harmonic + Zelda NES Cart = ?

Long before Guitar Hero and Samba de Amigo, the original Nintendo brought us iconic music in simple but brilliant midi ditties. Not only did our favorite classics have awesome soundtracks, but Super Mario Bros. 3 and the Legend of Zelda tapped into our budding imaginations with magical whistles which later, in Zelda’s case, became the ocarina. The ocarina, a 12,000 year old instrument, eventually morphed into an iPhone app by Smule giving iPhone users the ability to rock out and pretend we’re Link.

As if that wasn?t perfect enough, an eBay seller “nes_harmonica” has continued the trend of NES musical influence by bringing us the 8-bit Nintendo cartridge /harmonica!

Custom Made NES Zelda Harmonica

Custom Made NES Dick Tracy Harmonica

Custom Made NES Mario Brothers 3 Harmonica

Funny enough he’s built the harmonicas, quite appropriately, into a gold cart Zelda, Super Mario Bros. 3, and Dick Tracy! I’m pretty sure this is where brilliant meets absurd with brilliant winning. Will we see YouTube videos of people playing their harmonica along with their favorite NES game? Time will tell… (As a disclaimer, I don’t know the seller; however, he was kind enough to give me permission to use his photos. I’m not sure how well these work, but I certainly admire this creativity.)

If you’re more interested in an ocarina on your iPhone than in your NES cart, you can find the Ocarina app and other games at iTunes: All Your Music, All In One Place
