My Rare Video Game Finds: Atari Super Pong, Fatal Fury Special, Tropical Trouble

I love hunting for retro video games.  I’d say I enjoy it more than playing them…and possibly even more than collecting them.  I’m not sure why, but the joy of finding a needle in the haystack of flea market crap and getting the games for a great price is hugely satisfying to me.  Anyway, here are my finds from the last two weekends of hunting at the local flea market.

A few highlights…

  • Atari Super Pong System:  Sure enough this thing started right up…not bad since it was made in 1976!  I was about to list this on eBay when my girlfriend insisted it stay in the collection…great girlfriend!
  • Internation Superstar Soccer Deluxe (SNES):  Picked up this rare game (well…tarnished gem with some label wear) for my personal collection for $15.
  • “Super 8” Movie Collection:  Ok, I don’t know anything about 8 mm film, but I couldn’t pass these up.  Tarzan in the She-Devil, Zorro’s Suicide Express, Little Rascals Spooky Hooky, etc. Even if none of them worked, the covers alone would make awesome art pieces.
  • Fatal Fury Special (Game Gear):  My buddy had a Game Gear growing up.  I didn’t like it then, and I’m not interested in collecting it now.  However, since most of the games have very little value, I know it’s an easy system for other people to collect.  It turns out that Fatal Fury Special is one of the few games of value for the system, so that made a great find for me to pass along to someone’s collection.
  • Tropical Trouble & A LOT of Other Intellivision Games:  Tropical Trouble simply has some of the best label art of any video game I’ve ever seen!
  • Baldur’s Gate Dark Alliance II:  It’s always great to be looking through a folder of loose games and to find a gem.  Sure enough one seller had both of the Baldur’s Gate Playstation 2 games.
  • VMIGO System:  Every now and then curiosity gets the best of me.  When I saw this at the Flea Market, I had no idea what it was other than that it looks like a decently made weird little video game system. For $3, I couldn’t pass up.  It turns out that you use it to raise a virtual pet.  Best part is that the VMIGO portable pet “Game Boy” unit also functions as a pedometer.  It gives kids points for exercising!  lol  Expect to see this in my eBay store starting at a penny bid soon. ha ha

I had fun hunting for vintage gaming stuff.  Sure enough, I found a few rares for a good price.  That puts a few things into my collection and hopefully means that fellow collectors can find something for their own collections once I get it all listed on the GamesOgre eBay Store!  In the meantime, check out the rest of my photos below.  Happy collecting & retro gaming!

Rare Video Games & Collectibles on eBay: Atari 2600 Ewok Adventure Proto & Laura Croft Statue

Here’s are a few super rare and/or quite interesting video game collectibles that have popped up on eBay.  I have a feeling that this first prototype Atari 2600 is going to go for a mint!

STAR WARS:EWOK ADVENTURE GAME For Atari 2600 (Original) This is a dream of any collector, and I can only imagine the small fortune that someone will pay for it.  After all it’s both a prototype and falls into the highly collectible Star Wars universe.

It should be an interesting auction to watch.  See below for a gameplay video, but the idea behind the game is that you’re an Ewok fighting off stormtroopers, speeder bikes, and AT-ST units from your hang glider…just image the Return of the Jedi Ewok sceen.  (VGPC.com has a great article if you’re interested in more info on this game.)

From eBay seller bennettjpYou are bidding on a One-Of-A-Kind Atari 2600 VCS prototype, STAR WARS: Return of the Jedi – EWOK ADVENTURE!  As confirmed by the game’s programmer, Larry Gelberg, formerly of Parker Brothers, this prototype is authentic and is the only original prototype known in existence in all of North America!!!! (NTSC) The game was finished but never published due to management concerns that it was “too difficult” for gamers of that time period.  In 1983, when Parker Brothers pulled the plug on EWOK ADVENTURE, the programmer gave me this prototype.  I have been storing it in a safe place until now……”

LIFE SIZE LARA CROFT LEGEND TOMB RAIDER STATUE lifesize Officially licensed and simply awesome.  Some gamer is going to give up all hopes of getting a girlfriend and buy Lara instead.  Really though, this is impressive and belongs in a video game museum.

PLAYSTATION PS1 NUBY REALITY VEST VIBRATION PACK ~ RARE I’m not sure how rare this is, but I’d never seen one before.  It’s hillarious in that it turns your entire chest into a rumble pack.  (It reminds me of when I was a kid playing laser tag.  The silly headgear we used had a rumble pack attached to your temple…bad rumble tech…like a handbuzzer strapped to your head.)  Anyway, randomness aside, I though this was interesting enough to feature.

Nintendo Ceiling Fan Simply cool, but it’s a little crazy that the seller is asking $1,500 USD for it.

Every time I use eBay to buy a Fixed Price item now, I use Bing.com. It’s simply nuts that they offer this deal, and I’ve used it to buy a ton of retro video games for my collection.

Best part is that if a seller like myself is having a sale, you can take an additional 8% off using Bing.com (Yeah, that means 10% becomes 18%!). Check out my YouTube walkthrough if you haven’t done this before:

Signed MMO Poster Sells for More than Nintendo World Championships Gold Game Cart

Can you guess which of these is more valuable?

vs

As a collector, it’s hard to believe these final auction prices!  However, a signed poster just sold for more than the ultra rare and highly sought after Nintendo World Chapionships gold cart!

MMO Poster $14,999.44 > NWC Gold Cart $13,600.00

Trying to figure out this mystery, I’d like to take a look at the rarity of each and the fact that both were charity auctions.

“AE Signed Xan Poster (one-of-a-kind)”

Sold: Dec. 28, 2009 on eBay for $14,999.44 USD

Rarity: The seller of the poster explains to AdventureQuest, Mechquest, Dragonfable, AdventureQuest Worlds and EpicDuel players that “This is a one-of-a-kind Xan poster (24 inches wide x 30 3/4 inches tall) signed by several members of the Artix Entertainment development team (Artix, Cysero, Zhoom, Safiria, Warlic, Thyton, Beleen, Tomix, Ghost, J6, Llussion, Ai No Miko, Jemini, Korin, Geopetal, Aisha, Faith, Alac, Rolith, Nythera, Zazul & Yergen Von Shmergenbergen)! It is a beautiful, high-gloss print on high quality foam core and signed in lusterous silver Sharpie marker!”

Charity:  100% of the final sale price was being donated to a non-profit named Child’s Play.  “Child’s Play enables the gamer community to make a positive difference in the lives of children and young adults, primarily through donations of toys and games to childrens’ hospitals around the world as well as funding pediatric health research.”

Bids:  Most of the bids on this auction were from 0 Feedback bidders.  While this isn’t necessarily an indication of shill bidding (fake bids), it does give me less confidence in the bids.  Perhaps most of the bidders were new to eBay and thus had 0 feedback.  Being an eBay seller myself, most of the bidders who get carried away and never end up paying for an auction are people with less than 10 feedback.  For whatever reason, they often bid most wildly and never pay thus creating a falsely high value for the item.

My Final Thoughts: It goes without saying that MMOs are hugely popular.  Given the number of hours people play MMOs and the community created within them, it makes sense to me that a person can get quite attached to a video game.  Since so many free-to-play MMO games are dying, that puts a lot of former players into nastalgia mode…thus, perhaps a keepsake like this poster make sense and is appropriately quite valuable.  At the same time, all those 0 bids say to me that there’s a good chance that the price was inflated by wild bids that will never receive payment.  I’ll bet we’ll see the same poster up again within a few weeks due to a non-paying bidder.

“NINTENDO WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS Gold NWC 1990 Cartridge”

Sold: Dec. 21, 2009 on eBay for $13,600.00 USD

Rarity: Most collectors know about the rarity of this cartridge.  It’s legendary and is accepted by most that the closest they’ll every come to one is to settle for a reproduction or emulated version.  JJ Hendricks, the seller of the cart, explains that “Nintendo made fewer than 26 of these gold Nintendo World Championship cartridges and only 12 are known to exist today.”

Charity:  100% of the final sale price was being donated to a non-profit named World Vision.  “World Vision is a Christian relief and development organization dedicated to helping children and their communities worldwide reach their full potential by tackling the causes of poverty. We serve the worlds poor, regardless of a persons religion, race, ethnicity, or gender.”

Bids:  Most of the bids on this auction were from bidders with established feedback.  That means they’re eBay regulars and gives me more confidence in their bids.

My Final Thoughts: In June 2009 JJ tracked down this game and paid $17,500 for it.  The story of his acquiring the game is facinating if you haven’t already read it.  Bummer for JJ that it sold for about $4,000 less than he paid for it, but I’m sure he’ll get a nice tax deduction and has certainly given a great donation to a cause he believes in.

For whatever reason, the Nintendo World Championship 1990 Gold Cart sold for a bit less than I expected.  Given our current economic downturn, I’ve noticed that rare & collectible video game auctions have been going for quite a bit less than BIN (Buy-It-Now) listings.  I’ve gotten some great deals this way buy just grabbing some items for my retro gaming collection at absurdly low auction prices.  Thus, if we look at JJ’s $17.5k price as a Buy-It-Now on eBay, it makes sense that the cart would sell for less at auction.

I’m not sure how to explain the price of that poster other than how I already have above.  Like I said before, I’ll be that the price is inflated by an overzealous new bidder who probably won’t pay.  If that’s the case, then the NWC 1990 Gold Cartridge probably is still the more valuable item.  Yet, as we know from rare video game collecting, people do pay absurdly high prices for one of a kind super rare items.

Your Thoughts? If you have insight into any of this, I’d love to hear it in the comments.

My Rare Video Game Finds: 3 New Sealed Games Including Samurai Shodown

While out thrift shopping at a local flea market this past weekend, I was lucky enough to find a number of vintage video games.  Among them were 3 new sealed games!  It was a good day for retro video game hunting…

  • Super Star Wars Return of the Jedi Super Nintendo SEALED
  • 007 World is Not Enough N64 Nintendo 64 Game SEALED NEW
  • Samurai Shodown Warrior’s Rage Playstation Game SEALED — This game is super rare.  Although sealed, it’s a shame that it has a hole drilled in the spine.
